Get back from a $_BURNOUT

We all have those moments in which we feel like, we are in a depth… Everything that we try to do is breaking and the only good thing is that we are still alive after all of the fails. But with all of the bad things that are happening during those periods there are several good skill improvements that we get while we are “burned out”.

Very simple things: Problem solving, Heart attack survival, Self improvement

But before we can achieve the goods, we have to go trough our hardest times. Let’s go!

What is the burning out process?

Based on the psychology understandings “To be burned out” is a state of mind which occurs when you are pushing yourself trough your limits, too much & too often.

That sounds legit, right? But let’s be honest, if the final goal makes you to feel happy, the problem is not at that your are driving off the limits. The whole thing comes from that you are not passionate enough to overcome the difficulties which occurs on the track.

But why we are loosing “hope” in the things that we are doing?

Reasons for that can be as many as the stars, but one of the main are:

Human brain is structured to expect results.

So if we don’t see some as soon as the project starts, we start to loose interest. And with that we start to feel bad and exhausted working on the case…

The lack of support may drive to success or destroy a great idea.

As the quote above says “human brain is structured to expect results” and if those results are negative they can lead us to a very deep mental hole, which to bury our productivity along side with our ideas.

Personally I’ve experienced that issue with one of my projects. People where saying that the idea is stup*d and it’s a waste of time. They were saying that nobody will ever use it, but shortly after the release it becomes one of the popular plugins in WordPress.org for user listing directories.

Let me share something that I’ve learned trough the years… There aren’t anything like bad advertisement. If the people are talking about your idea, then those people have used your product and the chance someone else to followup and use it is over 99. So don’t give up even the darkest clouds come to you!

Once we understood what is the meaning of burning out. Let’s see

How to get over a burnout?

Once you fall offside, you are faced in front of two opportunities… To surrender or to scratch harder and dig your way back to the success.

I understand that when you’ve fall so deep it’s hard to continue fighting, but listen to me: You have to continue digging, there aren’t anything that you can’t do!

First of all: Face the problems

When you sit and draw a table of problems (contents), you’ll see the exact reasons and the exact things that had broken during the process. After that you’ll be able to found a solution for each of them.

Step by step, day by day, you’ll manage to fix those “blocker” issues.

If something is not fixing from the third time, you probably don’t need it or you are doing it in the wrong way. So go back the scratch board and see the requirements.

I remember that once I was struggling over the structure of a new product for 5 days… After that my partner came to me and said that simple thing – “Why don’t you re-think the idea?” Trust me, sometimes starting from the beginning is a better choice than struggling in the mess.

Second: Don’t break under the pressure

With the problems comes the stress. Yes it’s bad, but remember: You still have the oxygen in your lungs! So you still have a chance to get over the situation.

Reminding that key-part will help you to stay calm and think straight for a solution. And remember, don’t allow to yourself to fall in a depression. If that happens take a break. You need only three days to recover from a depression. Just forget about the responsibilities during that time and take a rest with the things that you like the most (for me it’s coffee, hookah and sunbathing next to a river, with the previous two things)!

Third: ^Level UP^

Once you face the problems, break the rules and find a solution for them, it’s time to sit and take the most important lessons from the situation. You can find-out how to avoid situations like this one, once you answer the following questions for you:

  1. Why those problems were that crucial?
  2. What are the hidden marks from them?
  3. Where do I stand after all?

After you find the answers of those questions, you are officially there.

Welcome back!

As I told you in every bad situation there are group of good things that will help you to improve yourself.

In the end, remember the three important steps to take over a $_BURNOUT:

  1. Face the problems
  2. Don’t break under the pressure
  3. Improve yourself

The coffice culture, etc.

With the coming of the technologies not only the industry is changing, but the working places are evolving too. And if you don’t understand it on time, you are fated to loose your hard working and conscientious employees.

Don’t believe me? Just watch!

Before a little less than decade, people were happy to work from an office and the office was representing the success. I don’t blame them, I believe in that too for a very long time.

Back then everyone was speaking about how hard is to concentrate on your job from other place different from your office… That’s probably true in some cases, but it all depends on you and your believes for a comfortable work place.

Nowadays offices are usually overloaded with employees working in totally different spheres. Which is not so bad, because you can learn something interesting in every moment, but that is literally killing your concentration, which reflects on your productivity. And that’s what makes the offices of 2017 even more distracting places…

What can be done?

Of course you can “pack” each of your employees in a single cardboard boxes and everyone of them will work from his/hers box from 9am to 6pm but that is killing the social spirit and increases the potential which I’ve mentioned above…

So what can be done?

As one of my favorite pictures says: Employees stays when they are…

VALUED is the keyword. When your employees are doing their jobs strictly and respectfully to you and your business, there aren’t any reasons why to not allow them to work from everywhere they want.

That will not only make your people happier, but it will also save you money from rent, internet and free stuff for the office. Instead of that you may invest part of them in coffee shops which offers business cards. For example Starbucks (I’m a SB lover) has a very interesting packages which totally works for this kind of experience.

Why companies don’t do that?

I love to meet with new people from the sphere, with whom to speak for business and share ideas… And on my latest meets I was curious if they are a supporters of the coffice culture as me, so I’ve asked.

Guess what?! The answers were “No! Are you mad? That happens only in Hollywood.”;

That personally trows me in the touch line and my curiosity has grown even more, with it I continue to ask… On the question Why? people were answering different things. From security to the bad internet connection

Let’s be honest guys, we are living in 21st century and today is 30 of January 2017. You can browse your Instagram from every spot in the world and you are telling me that the internet connectivity is the problem?! That can be easily fixed with a single Mobile Hotspot plan for your company, which is cheaper & better than your local office internet provider.

About the security. I really love when someone starts to tell me how the only safe place in the world from where you can share your files is the office… Guys once again, we are in the 21st century, you can move your VPN anywhere you go with you.

And what happened? The only obvious reason, why employers don’t allow their employees to work from where they like is the trust. They just don’t trust in that you’ll continue to do your job, if they are not staying right behind you, poking you with a sti*k until you git commit all of your changes…

In conclusion

Business is just like a relationship… If you don’t trust the people with whom you are working, why are you working with them?!

I personally believe that every job can be done from every place you like. Only if you are a farmer that may be a little problem, but I’m sure that Starbucks has a “farm package” too… 😀

You still don’t believe me?

It will be a pleasure if you join me on my Sunday coffic-ing next week!

2016 from Gero’s eyes

Hurray! It’s this time of the year again, where we are going to look back and make fun of our fails and celebrate our wins.

How it starts?

My personal 2016 was the weirdest, coolest & depressing year of my life. It started casually with a few drinks on 1st of January, which was pretty nice, but the real show started a few weeks later, when I’ve decided to move my life from а “retiree” to a newborn working machine.

Back then I was working at Devrix as a Junior WordPress developer. But after the moment of enlightenment, I’ve took some points and not so far behind I took the promotion too. And after a while I was promoted to a Senior.

On this position I had not only to do my full stack web development job, but I had to manage a team of three people, who were working with me. This was one of the most interesting things which I’ve done this year and one of the things that gave me a lot of “food to think on”. Everyday was different because of the different cases which appeared in every different aspect of our work. And as usual there where good and bad days, but probably the most important part of the success was NOT TO MIX your personal problems with your job. I’ve learned that by the hard way and it wasn’t pretty.

Anyway let’s continue with the story…

After the mashup I’ve started to burnout. And as you’ve thought all of this stress reflected on me. But I haven’t really realize that until the moment when my face literally started to fall. Strange but obvious my up layer skin was started to fall because of the lack of vitamin B & D. Then I’ve started to ask my self if its worth it… And actually I’ve thought on that for a very long time until one day when I’ve woke up and *puf* I knew that I had to quit and start something new.

What happened after I’ve quit?

There aren’t any words that may describe that feeling. It’s like staying on a hot beach sand and after a 3 hours of burning skin you jump directly in the cold sea water. That’s pretty much it.

You start to feel alive and free again and everything was perfect in the first two weeks. After that I’ve saw that my bank balance started to go dooown and I’ve started to look for a new place where to start my path. Sadly I’ve “hit on a stone” because of the summer season which I choose to start looking for a new job. It took me one month of meetings and presentations before I’ve found a new place where to continue my path.

“That wasn’t that bad tho. During that time I’ve built great friendships with a lot of beautiful and smart women in the face of HRs.”

New page of my book!

At the new place I wasn’t doing a lot of programming job. There the things were more related to the marketing and advertising sphere. On first look this depressed me a little bit, because by profession & by heart I am a software developer. But after I started to learn more and more about the different marketing strategies and advertising tricks, I’ve told my self – “Why don’t you start your own company?”. That was the second great step that I’ve made in 2016.

After a two weeks of design and development it was finally ready for start. The newborn was called Dloober. and only two days after the official start and the first promotion, there comes our first client. During the client meetings I’ve learned a lot about the human psychological conditions.

“If you want to win a client, make him to feel you close.”

If you follow this simple rule, you won’t have any problems in winning an argument with a client or with a random beauty on the street.

In the end of 2016…

In the end of 2016 I would like to say, THANK YOU! To everyone who was part of it and make it one of the most dynamic years of my life…

Today is 10 of January 2017, so let’s see what is laying ahead.

Cheers and good luck everyone,

See you in 2017!

From 0 to programming (er)!

Wooah since there are dozens of articles on this theme, I’ll try to share with you my “secrets” about how you could learn to write beautiful code and understand its passion in a uniquer way.

What is “programming”?

Many people may say that programming is the phase where you are just “typing” the code of your application… But actually it’s much more than just typing…

While one person is “programming” he is concentrated deeply on his work, which allows his brain to connect the dots even before he had developed the whole picture. That by itself makes the brain to send stimulation impulses between the Frontal Lobesand the Imagination Engine, which makes the person to think and grow his ability to solve problems in the real world, allowing him to see the solution directly in his head.

So basically when you are programming you are learning and self improving yourself.

How to start?

There are a lot of ways how you can start with programming, but the one which worked for me is – Self inspiration.

What is “Self inspiration” ?!

Imagine that you have some serious problem which hasn’t solution on first look… Then you start to struggle, but you still don’t see the solution… Then the “small” depression comes.

Then you are going to ask yourself – “Is it worth it?” for a lot of people the answer is “No” but if you wan’t so to change the world there isn’t any easy way to do that. So you have to struggle until the solution popups in your head.

That is what I call self inspiration – “The spirit to solve your own problems alone”.

Back in the days when I was a newbie, my struggle was bound with the tons of information which was coming to me and the lack of time which appeared, because of missed deadlines and forgotten tasks. So I’ve decided to create a simple program for notes which idea was to notify me when the due date comes. It sounds pretty simple and funny but back then there weren’t any good solutions for my Windows XP. So I’ve started…

Which is the right language to start with?

Well, there will be a lot of opinions about that, but in the end the answer is – IT DEPENDS.

It depends on that what are you willing to build? A WEB application? A Desktop application? A mobile application? What is your idea? (share in the comments)

I’ve developed the notification app on the Pascal programming language. It is one very simple and good language for very … very low level programmers. Of course you may like to choose C as a starting language since it is in the bottom of every modern technology nowadays… C is the ancestor of C++, Objective C, C# and even the WEB scripting language PHP is based on it. So it is a very strong platform which can give you the basics, which you’ll need for the next step.

The understanding of your idea and choosing the correct language are the first steps on which you are going to struggle every time when you are starting a new project.

The Platform

This is the most interesting and hard step of the project (before the sales). Before you start to hit the keyboard and generate large amount of code you have to know and understand the platform for which you are going to build the product.

Which languages does it supports? Which is the language of the platform it self? The product is for the platform or the platform is just a host?

Those are the next questions which you had to answer before you can start to develop the great things.

For example if you are going to build an iOS application you would like to know which parts of the OS is open for developers and which are not, which hardware components can be used in your application?

Once you make sure that you have answers of those questions you are ready to start!

fun CODDING_() { “I”, “<3”, “programming” }

When you are new to a programming language it is a good practice to start with it’s documentation and niceties. Only then you’ll be ready for the real deal!

Every project have some interface… Even the apps which are written for the CLI (Command Line Interface). So I suggest you to visualize your ideas on paper or if you don’t like to move with a notebook you can use this amazing free tool called Sketchpad.

Sketching your ideas (a.k.a scratches) can help you to understand the idea better and see the project in different ways. Even if you are not good at drawing DON’T hesitate to scratch something.

You’ll be amazed how simple scratches can turn your thinking to a whole new level.

About the haters and the fear

These days a lot of people are telling me that the reason for giving up is all the hate and insults which, they’ve received as a feedback from their co-workers…

Sadly, the jealousy is deeply programmed in the human nature and there is nothing that we can do about it. People start to make fun of your first tries for bunch of reasons… Psychological research have proven that, when we see a potential competitor in someone we start to hit him mentally with hateful speech and words that are meant to discourage him. That is a fact even if we barely understood that we were doing it…

So the only thing that had left for you is to FIGHT BACK! Sometimes there will be people who’ll try to demotivate you, people who’ll try to convince you in that your idea is stup*d. But remember that – NEVER GIVE UP on your dreams, you are unique!

Even I’ve received some hateful emails yesterday which were addressed to my very first WEB project… But there is nothing that can be done about it, humans are humans even without the need for hate it will be there…

There aren’t any easy ways to start something new, but once you’ve succeeded, you’ll see how everyone who’ve tried to discouraged you, will start to follow you – Unknown dreamer
